Water is the vector through which climate change and environmental challenges affect residents first and most directly in the City of New Orleans. Too often, however, resilience planning, water infrastructure design, and systems operations and management are developed exclusively by planners and engineers, without engaging residents. Yet, when we bring science tools and resources to the community, residents are empowered to create and prepare actionable plans to protect and sustain their families, assets, and communities through environmental conditions and impacts. This presentation will share the results of these community engagement efforts in the Claiborne Corridor, a historically low-income neighborhood in New Orleans that has witnessed many instances of flooding. In order to adapt the area and build a project of community resilience, water management experts worked with civic leaders, residents and urban planners to design together the City of New Orleans’ response to flooding and water management in the Claiborne Corridor.
This presentation will provide the attendees with the opportunity to hear the main processes, successes and lessons learned from the Claiborne Corridor in working together with civic leaders, residents and urban planners to enhance the resilience to flooding and water management in the Claiborne Corridor.
